Tamiya welcomes an updated re-issue of Item 24130 1/24 Morris Mini Cooper Racing with updated decals, instruction manual and packaging. The Morris Mini was introduced in October 1959 and was a departure from automotive designs of that era. By using a 2-box styling, they produced a four-seat compact car about 3 meters in length that used a front engine, front wheel drive layout. It initially had an 848cc, 34hp engine, which allowed a speed of 115km/h.
This outstanding design provided room for four large adults to be seated comfortably. Its patented โHydrolasticโ four-wheel independent suspension system, introduced in 1964 to replace the earlier very compact rubber cone system, was another excellent innovation.
This superbly balanced car also performed well on racing circuits, and John Cooper of British racing fame, souped up the engine and introduced it as the Morris Mini Cooper. A series of modifications began in 1961 using a 997cc engine followed by a 998cc engine in the Cooper, then a 1,071cc, 67.5hp Cooper S in 1963; in 1964 the popular 1275cc, 75hp car came out, along with a special 970cc racing version.
Competition versions of the 1275S and 970S were often known as โWorks Minisโ, the 1275S being modified to have a 1,293cc powerplant, which filled the 1,300cc class requirement, and put out 91hp. The racing Mini proved its potential by dominating races held in 1964 and 1965. It won the 1967 1,300cc class title in the British Saloon Car Championship (BSCC), the 1968 European Touring Car Championship, and again clinched the BSCC title that same year. With its many track and rally successes, the Mini Cooper is a true motorsports gem.

Tamiya Morris Mini Cooper 1275S Mk.I 1/24 Model Kit - Item #24039
1/24 Scale
Tamiya welcomes updated re-issues of our two 1/24 scale Mini Cooper 1275S Mk.I kits with updated decals, instruction manual and packaging. The legendary Mini achieved a lofty second place in the prestigious Car of the Century awards announced in 1999.
The original Mini was produced from 1959 until 2000 without any major model changes, and was a forerunner for the wealth of front-engine, front-wheel drive compact cars of today. While just 3 meters in length, its 10-inch wheels were positioned at the corners and allowed a cabin spacious enough to seat four adults, and it was packed with design ingenuity like a two-box layout with a transverse engine and the transmission and gearbox in the oil sump, plus front double wishbone and rear trailing arm suspension with rubber cones in place of springs.
In 1959, the British Motor Company released two versions of the Mini based on their Morris and Austin brands โ the Morris Mini Minor and the Austin Seven. In 1961, John Cooper of British racing fame souped-up the engine and introduced it to the public as the Morris Mini Cooper. Later, the Mini Cooper S was also created for race and rally participation.
The Mini Cooper 1275S Mk.I was released in 1964, featuring a 1,275cc engine. Just prior to this, the 1071S was entered in the 1964 rally in Monte Carlo, with many higher-powered opponents. What it lacked in power, it made up for in nimbleness, taking the overall victory in the โ64 race, followed by the 1275S taking victory in the โ65 and โ67 races. Both Morris and Austin versions of the Mini Cooper S were built, differing from each other only in grille design and emblem. And while a new version of the Mini was announced in September 2000, the worldwide popularity of the original Mini remains as strong as ever.
